What Is Expected of Lawyers in Today’s Society

Modern society continues to transform at an unprecedented pace, driven by technological innovations such as AI and blockchain, deepening globalization, and the rapid evolution of social structures. In this environment, the nature and emergence of legal challenges have also fundamentally changed. We increasingly encounter situations where conventional frameworks alone are no longer sufficient to provide effective solutions. Lawyers cannot remain mere bystanders to these shifts; rather, we recognize our responsibility to stand at the forefront of this transformation, fulfilling the evolving needs of society.

What is required of lawyers today is not merely the ability to apply existing laws and precedents. Rather, it is the capacity to identify appropriate legal structures for new challenges arising within a constantly changing reality and to translate them into effective solutions. In other words, lawyers must possess the insight to accurately grasp modern trends and discern their essence. Even in domains where clear answers do not yet exist, we are expected to construct rational and persuasive frameworks for resolution.

Furthermore, in contemporary legal issues where interests are intricately intertwined, asserting a one-sided position is not always the optimal solution. It is crucial to accurately analyze the disadvantages and risks our clients face, working to mitigate or avoid them while guiding the situation toward the most reasonable conclusion from a long-term perspective. To achieve this, it is indispensable to look beyond legal expertise alone. We must conduct multi-faceted evaluations—incorporating the business environment and social impact—to present solutions that function effectively in the real world.

I believe that a lawyer is a professional who brings order to the diverse challenges of society using the framework of the law, and who derives optimal outcomes from within conflict and uncertainty. We must face uncharted territories without hesitation, conducting exhaustive research and deliberation to build solutions that deliver substantial value to our clients. I am convinced that the duty of a lawyer in the modern era is to play a role that goes beyond resolving individual matters—it is to contribute to the resolution of societal challenges through the steady accumulation of these efforts.

Experience at Nishimura & Asahi, Japan’s Largest Law Firm

At Nishimura & Asahi, the largest law firm in Japan, I was engaged in a wide range of practice areas, including corporate misconduct and crisis management, various types of litigation, general corporate law, civil and criminal cases, and cross-border transactions. Through my involvement in such diverse matters, I learned firsthand that legal issues never exist in isolation. Instead, they are intricately linked with complex factors such as business operations, organizational structures, and the international regulatory landscape.

In the field of corporate crisis management, it is essential to accurately grasp the facts within a limited timeframe, conduct a swift yet precise legal evaluation, and construct the optimal course of action for the organization. This process requires more than just a detailed examination of relevant laws; it involves synthesizing fragmented information into a coherent and rational narrative through stakeholder interviews, rigorous review of internal and external documents, and the reconstruction of factual events. Furthermore, it is indispensable to support decision-making from a perspective that looks beyond mere legal justification, considering the long-term impact on the company’s social credibility and business continuity.

In cross-border matters, I have navigated complex issues by collaborating with international law firms and experts, always taking into account the diverse legal systems and business customs involved. Achieving a consistent and integrated solution across different regulatory environments and practices requires more than just an accumulation of knowledge; it demands practical judgment to grasp the situation in its entirety and to coordinate effectively between various stakeholders. Through these experiences, I have developed the ability to provide clear strategic direction without losing sight of the big picture, even in the most complex cases.

All of these engagements were carried out under intense pressure and significant responsibility. In environments where the interests of various parties were in sharp conflict, I was constantly challenged to find solutions that were both realistic and effective. Through these experiences, I have refined my ability to simultaneously organize numerous complex issues, identify critical priorities, and execute the necessary actions with precision.

The successful resolution of such challenging cases brings more than just a sense of personal achievement; it provides a profound sense of fulfillment that comes from having met my responsibilities as a legal professional. These experiences serve as the vital foundation of my current practice, enabling me to confront complex problems with persistence and to consistently derive the optimal solutions.

The Kind of Lawyer I Strive to Be

The origin of my aspiration to become a lawyer lies in a desire to provide sustained and meaningful value to society through the intellectual framework of the law. Beyond legal knowledge and academic learning, I believe that integrating the judgment and insight cultivated through experience is essential to fulfilling the true role of a professional—one that contributes not only to resolving individual cases but also to the stability and development of society as a whole.

Based on this philosophy, my starting point is always to accurately understand what each client values most. Even when legal issues appear similar on the surface, the underlying circumstances and priorities differ greatly from case to case. Rather than relying on formalistic legal application, I strive to consider the client’s business environment, specific situation, and long-term implications, in order to present solutions that are both rational and practically effective, thereby delivering the highest quality legal services.

The role of a lawyer extends beyond handling individual matters. In an era of rapid change, how expertise is accumulated within an organization and passed on to the next generation is directly linked to the development of the legal profession as a whole. As mobility within the legal profession continues to increase, it is essential not only for individuals to demonstrate their capabilities but also to establish a foundation through which talented professionals can be continuously developed and contributed to society.

At SAKURA Law Office, we regard it as a core mission to cultivate professionals who combine advanced practical expertise with strong analytical thinking and ethical standards, and to contribute them to society as leaders in the development of legal practice. By building an organization where individual lawyers maintain a high level of independence while also leveraging collective strength, we aim to create a sustainable foundation capable of addressing increasingly complex and wide-ranging challenges.

Continuously delivering tangible value to our clients while strengthening the very foundation of the legal profession—achieving both is the vision I strive for as a lawyer, and the role that SAKURA Law Office seeks to fulfill. We will continue to refine ourselves through constant effort and contribute responsibly to society, both as individuals and as an organization.
